The Day That My Life Changed Forever
Hi...I'm Dr. Cherine
Do you ever feel like there aren't enough hours in the day...? You make commitments to yourself to get to the gym, eat right, and take time for yourself... then suddenly or "regularly"... your life seems to get in the way??? 

I am a mom of four boys, a wife, and an owner of two businesses. I get the "not enough hours in the day" feeling, just like many of you!

I remember when I gained almost 60 lbs. with my first son! Just to put this into perspective.... I am 5'0" (and half and an inch)! That made me almost as wide as I was tall. I had to lose all that weight while going through graduate school, working 40 hours a week on top of that, and having a newborn.

Fast forward, a few years, I opened my practice, had a second child and was carrying the post baby extra pounds. I was "thinking" I was living healthy, until I kept falling asleep, while reading to my kids at night. I was NOT thriving, and my tank was empty by the end of the day.

I knew it was time that I lost the extra weight and got more energy. I started making some changes here and there but I wasn’t fully committed.

This, however, as about to change......

I received the dreaded phone call that my father had died. I couldn’t believe it! He was only 57 years young. My father wasn’t an overly large man. He was 6’ 0” tall and had a 36” waist. If you looked at him, you wouldn’t say he was severely overweight. He like many of us, was carrying some extra weight but was still enjoying his life.
I was crushed. Not only was I devastated that he had died...the worst part was my last conversation with him.
 
I had spoken to my father a week ago! I was telling him that he needed to change his eating habits and lifestyle. I told him that I would teach him what to do when he came to visit in 2 weeks, to meet his second grandson for the first time.

He said to me, "I know I should...but I'm good. Some things, I just don't want to change."

Those words...that lifestyle...was what took my dad’s life.... way too early!
It kept running through my mind over and over. He didn’t want to change. 
I don’t think he realized how much this would affect his family, his loved ones. 

Because living healthy wasn’t important enough to him, it took him from us. He never met his second grandson, he will never see them play a sport, he would never see them go to college, get married or grow into young men…He was gone!

That’s was the catalyst I needed to make a REAL CHANGE in my life.
 
I could be next!  I was already seeing the warning signs that I wasn’t thriving in my life…. I was tired, overwhelmed, burning the candle at both ends.

I did not want my children to think that they “were not worth making the changes for!” I knew I needed to lose some weight but more importantly I needed to make sure that I was there for them for many years!

I dove headfirst into implementing everything I had learned as a doctor, I immersed myself in learning even more so I could live life to its fullest. I had an insatiable fire to help as many people live healthier!  I did weight-loss and wellness programs in hospitals for their nurses, went into companies to work with employees, provided programs in my office for my patients…. 

I started running marathons and was at the top of my game fitness wise and nutritionally.

Then my life went through another drastic change. I got a divorce and it rocked the world of my boys.
I refocused my energy on them. I kept thinking that I had to be there for them and by me doing all these things that I was being selfish. I questioned my identity. I wanted my identity to be as a mom, not just a wellness fanatic.

I started to slip back into some of the old habits I had that I worked so hard to break but I wanted to be there for my kids. I didn’t feel like I could do both.

That’s when my oldest son confronted me. He said, “What happened to my mom, the mom that went after anything? That strong person who would take on any challenge and wouldn’t sit around watching tv and not be doing something? I miss her.
   
Oh my gosh!!!! Here I was thinking that I was doing the right thing as a mom! When really, the best thing I could do was take care of ME! To set the example for them! To fill myself with fuel and energy so I can keep to my promise to be there as long as I can be for them!

That's the day I signed up for my first Ironman. I knew I had to COMMIT to something!

At this point, I had not run further than 5 miles at a time in over a year, had only ridden a bike a few times (I didn't even own one), and 
I could not swim farther than 1 length of a pool ( I signed up for 170 lengths)!!!!

An Ironman is 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.22-mile (42.20 km) run, raced in that order ..... 140.62 miles.... without a break!!!

WHAT WAS I THINKING?!?!?!
I was thinking that I had to make a change. I had to do something that wouldn’t allow me to stay where I was. I wanted to be that example for my boys that they knew and loved.
   
No, I am not telling anyone reading this that you have to do an Ironman!   

What I am saying is that if any of this is hitting home with you, if you know that you need to lose weight, if you want to be healthier, have more energy, create more balance in your life, and be here on this earth for many years to come to create memories….. You must commit to something!

It is not just your waist line or how you look in the mirror that depends on it...your life or somebody you know may depend on it.

I have committed to giving everyone I can the tools to live healthy, be at their ideal weight and THRIVE!

I am in my mid forty's, am a wife, now have 4 boys, and work a lot of hours,  
I get that life can be hectic and sometimes we lose sight of taking care of ourselves. That's why it is so important to have support to keep you motivated, on track, and surrounding yourself with others who have the same goals as you.
